2.Dialect and standard in Italo-Romance: Some general issues
One of the key elements of the sociolinguistic situation characterising Italy is the coexistence of Italian and Italo-Romance dialects, the latter being widespread throughout the peninsula (see Figure 1).1 Italo-Romance dialects are not dialects of Italian, as they do not result from the geographic differentiation of Italian. Indeed, they derive from the Italo-Romance vernaculars spoken in the Middle Ages. They are coeval with the Italo-Romance vernacular from which standard Italian developed, i.e. fourteenth-century Florentine, and, therefore, predate the spread of Italian across the country. Italo-Romance dialects are hence âprimary dialectsâ, to use Coseriuâs (1980) terminology.
